On September 5, 2017, the Trump administration formally announced that it will end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program while also leaving Congress a six-month window to possibly save the policy. DACA is a program established by President Barack Obama in 2012 that grants a form of temporary protection from deportation known as "deferred action" to undocumented immigrants who came to the United States before the age of 16, have resided here since June 2007, and meet other requirements.
Under the plan, announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the Trump administration will stop considering new applications for legal status dated after today, but will allow any DACA recipients with a permit set to expire before March 5, 2018, the opportunity to apply for a two-year renewal by October 5. Individuals whose permits expire on March 6 or later will begin to lose their protections and work permits as soon as they expire, putting them at risk of deportation.
The program has nearly 800,000 participants, 240,000 of whom live in California and 15,000 in Santa Clara County, according to 2016 data from the Migration Policy Institute. The program’s goal is to allow young people -- many of whom have lived the majority of their lives in the U.S. -- to contribute to their communities without living in fear of being deported.
