CCOC Students Selected for Adobe Youth Voices Filmmaking Camp at Cinequest Film Festival
Four students from Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) will walk the red carpet for their films premier at the Cinequest Film Festival on March 6. Vanessa Lozzano, Melissa Macabinta, Alexandria Post, and Jake Garza from CCOC's Video Production program produced the short films this month at Adobe Youth Voices Filmmaking Camp at Cinequest Film Festival.
The four began the three-week minicamp at Adobe’s downtown headquarters on February 13. They were among 30 Bay Area participants that were split into five filmmaking groups: Stop Motion, Motion Graphics, Video Documentary, Music Video, and Flash Animation. Students work in teams of six to produce high quality short films that allow students to express their views on social issues.
Macabinta and Lozzano, both from Milpitas High School, are on the Music Video team. They said that on the first day, the team wrote and recorded a song called The Same Struggle. Macabinta said the song is aimed at teenagers and is about students who hang out together in clicks without really interacting with others outside of their group. She said if teens took the time to interact, they would discover that they all are going through similar issues and really do have things in common. This week, the team is putting the finishing touches on the music video for the song which has parts sung by Macabinta and rapped by Lozzano.
"Our skills that we learned at CCOC have really helped us a lot," Macabinta said. "When the Adobe mentor was explaining details to us in filmmaking terms, we knew exactly what they were talking about."
Garza, who also attends Capitol High School, is in the documentary film group and said that the AYV camp has been a really good experience. His group is producing a short human documentary film on the way people live their lives now. Garza said he has been able to network with professionals in the field and they have shared useful tips with him on filmmaking. Post, who also attends Leigh High School, is in the Stop Motion film group.
