CCOC Students Named Finalists in State Flu Film Contest; Public Voting Runs Through January 31

Three Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) students have been named finalists for their public service announcement (PSA) video entry into the California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) Flu Fighting Festival Contest. California residents from across the state can vote for their entry, "PSA Final by Ribbonscars," until January 31.

The short PSA was filmed and produced by students in CCOC's Video Production program: seniors Catrina Alderete from Piedmont Hills; Daniel Morales, from Leland High School; and junior, Michah Orozco, from Branham High School. To vote for CCOC's students, visit http://cdphfilmfest.org and click on the fifth video (Ribbonscars) listed under the Video PSA: English category.

The contest was open to high school students across the state between the ages of 14 and 17. Entries had to be submitted by November 30, 2010 in one of the following categories: Video PSA: English; Video PSA: Spanish; Poster Design: English; or Poster Design PSA: Spanish.

The goal of the contest was to get students to develop a message for the public that was informative and would motivate the public to take steps to prevent the spread of the flu. Entries had to contain one of the following messages: to get vaccinated; stay home if you're sick; cover your cough or sneeze; or wash your hands often. Finalists were selected based on their entry's message theme, creativity, and entertainment value.

A total of four statewide winners will be selected based on the public's votes, one from each category. The winner from each category will receive a $250 gift card provided by the California Immunization Coalition, and a certificate. Winners will be announced during the week of February 13 to 19 which is Preteen Vaccine Week.
