CCOC Places First in Christmas in the Park High School Tree Decorating Competition
Central County Occupational Center’s (CCOC’s) Interior Design Program was named the First Place winner in San Jose’s Christmas in the Park High School Tree Decorating Competition. Their entry, Spirit of Adventure (tree #705) based on the Disney movie Up, won in the Art related category for high school tree decorating.
“We had a great time designing our tree and we are so excited that we won first place,” CCOC Interior Design Instructor, Wendy Yegge, said.
The tree’s Up display is composed of items from the movie including: balloons, waterfall, blimp, mailbox, candy bars, Dug the dog, Carl the old grandpa, Russell the adventure scout, and Kevin the exotic rare bird. More than 50 students in Yegge’s morning and afternoon CCOC Interior Design program (representing 15 high schools) spent three weeks designing the display. Students came up with the Up theme after brainstorming more than 40 ideas, and voting and choosing the theme that would be the most fun for families and children to view.
Other CCOC Programs teamed up with the Interior Design Program to make the elaborate display. CCOC’s Carpentry Program helped build the Victorian house used in the display along with other props; the Welding Program built the metal frames for the characters and the walker for Carl. The Electrical Maintenance Program helped assemble items and supplied the wiring for the balloons. CCOC’s Graphic Design Program helped with laminating the candy bars, postcards, and photo album used in the elaborate display.
CCOC’s Interior Design class is open to high school juniors and seniors from six high school districts: Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District, Campbell Union High School District, East Side Union High School District, San Jose Unified School District, Milpitas Unified School District, and the Santa Clara Unified School District.
Christmas in the Park is located at Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park in downtown San Jose and is open daily until December 27. Be sure to stop by and check out CCOC’s Spirit of Adventure Up display located on tree #705.
