Students Earn College Credits at CCOC's Summer EMT

Thirty former Central County Occupational Center (CCOC) students are earning five units of college credit at Foothill College this month at the inaugural Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Academy. The academy is a partnership between CCOC, Foothill College, Job Corps, and MetroED's six participating school districts.

The EMT Academy is held at CCOC and Foothill College five days a week. Upon successful completion of the 180 hour academy, students will earn five units of college credit and be eligible to take the National Registry Exam for EMT’s. The five units is on top of the up to 10 ten units of college credit that many students already earned while attending CCOC while in high school. This first session of the EMT Academy consists entirely of former CCOC students who completed CCOC’s Fire Science/First Responder, Health Occupations, Medical Assisting, and Law Enforcement programs.

Students were selected to participate in the program and to qualify students had to be 18 years or older by the end of August, pass a drug test, background check, and have all of the required immunizations. All of the equipment, training materials, services by Foothill Health Clinic, lunches, transportation to and from Foothill College, Foothill registration fees, and supplies were funded by an SB70 competitive grant written by Alexandra Duran, Foothill College Program Director for Career and College Connection with input from CCOC’s Director John Fox, and Assistant Principal, Sylvia Evans. This is the first college level class at Foothill College that is made up entirely of recent CCOC students.

Foothill College is planning an evening Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) college class at CCOC starting in mid-September. Any adult student desiring to enroll in the evening EMT class must do so with Foothill College. Registration begins electronically on August 1st and requires a Foothill College student ID number.

High school students attend CCOC for half of their school day and their home high school for the other half of the school day. CCOC classes are available to those that live in its six participating districts: Campbell Union High School District; East Side Union High School District; Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District; Milpitas Unified School District; San Jose Unified School District, and Santa Clara Unified School District.
