Metropolitan Adult Education Program to hold Annual Graduation; SJUSD Superintendent Don Iglesias to Serve as Keynote Speaker
The Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP) will hold its annual adult high school graduation on June 16, at
6:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Education District campus located at 760 Hillsdale Avenue, San Jose.
Members of the MetroED Governing Board will present high school diplomas to more than 90 adult graduates.
San Jose Unified School District Superintendent, Don Iglesias, who is retiring this year, will serve as
the keynote speaker. MAEP provides adult education to residents living within the SJUSD boundaries.
"Congratulations to all of the 2010 MAEP Adult High School Diploma graduates who have gotten where they
are through persistence, resilience and lots of hard work," MAEP Director Sylvia Karp, said.
Eighty-two percent of the graduates plan to continue their education upon graduation. Future educational
goals include video production, multimedia, marine biology, business administration, medical field, law school,
psychology, veterinary technician, teaching, and the armed forces.
At the ceremony, two students will receive a lifelong learning award, two students will
receive outstanding student awards, and nine students will be awarded scholarships to assist
them in continuing their educational pursuits. Students will learn that they have been chosen
for awards and scholarships at the graduation ceremony.
The adult graduation ceremony will also feature student speakers, music by the San Jose Metropolitan
Band, and a color guard presentation by the United States Marine Corps.
MAEP-a unit of MetroED-provides educational opportunities in 29 locations throughout San Jose and
Campbell. A combined total of about 20,000 adults are served annually in a variety of day and evening
classes, including; English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Skills, Adult Secondary Education,
GED Preparation and Testing, Medical Assisting, Office Skills and more.
MetroED is the largest career-oriented educational organization in
Santa Clara County, comprised of high school and adult occupational,
academic and community programs.
MetroED annually provides 30,000 diverse students with the skills
to help them be productive, income-earning and tax-paying contributors to
Silicon Valley.
