Metropolitan Adult Education Program to hold Annual Graduation; John Sellarole to Serve as Keynote Speaker
The Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP) will hold its annual adult high school graduation on June 7, at 6:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Education District campus located at 760 Hillsdale Avenue, San Jose.
Members of the MetroED Governing Board will present high school diplomas to more than 85 adult graduates. John Sellarole, Former Executive Director for Adult Education at the East Side Union High School District and MetroED Foundation Board Member, will serve as the keynote speaker. Dr. Sellarole has over 40 years of experience in education and continues to be actively involved in the education community since his retirement in August 2001.
"Our adult students, many of whom have families, jobs and a myriad of responsibilities have shown perseverance and determination in the pursuit of their high school diplomas; they have earned this celebration," MAEP Director Sylvia Karp, said.
90 percent of the graduates plan to continue their education upon graduation. Future educational goals include firefighting, nursing, dental technician, pharmacist, teaching, psychology, HVAC technician, veterinarian, and computer science professional.
At the ceremony, three students will receive a lifelong learning award, two students will receive outstanding student awards, and five students will be awarded scholarships to assist them in continuing their educational pursuits. Students will learn that they have been chosen for awards and scholarships at the graduation ceremony.
The adult graduation ceremony will also feature student speakers, music by the San Jose Metropolitan Band, and a color guard presentation by the United States Marine Corps.
MAEP offers a variety of day and evening classes, including; English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Skills, Adult Secondary Education, GED Preparation and Testing, Accounting, Medical Assisting, Office Skills and more.
