Metropolitan Adult Education Program to hold Annual Graduation; Supervisor Dave Cortese to serve as Keynote Speaker
The Metropolitan Adult Education Program (MAEP) will hold its annual adult high school graduation on June 17, at 6:00 p.m. at the Metropolitan Education District campus located at 760 Hillsdale Avenue, San Jose.
Members of the MetroED Governing Board will present high school diplomas to more than 100 adult graduates. Dave Cortese with the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will serve as the keynote speaker.
This year's graduation will make 83-year-old Frank Ganz's goal of becoming a high school graduate a reality! The World War II veteran said that he has gone to most of his grandchildren's graduations and now they were coming to his! "Congratulations to Frank and all of the 2009 MAEP Adult High School Diploma graduates who have gotten where they are through persistence, resilience and lots of hard work," MAEP Director Sylvia Karp, said.
Twenty-one percent of the graduates plan to continue their education upon graduation. Future educational goals include political science, film directing, engineering, medicine, business, psychology, and child development.
At the ceremony, one student will receive a lifelong learning award, four students will receive outstanding student awards, and five students will be awarded scholarships to assist them in continuing their educational pursuits. Students will learn that they have been chosen for awards and scholarships at the graduation ceremony.
The adult graduation ceremony will also feature student speakers, music by the San Jose Metropolitan Band, and a color guard presentation by the United States Marine Corps.
MAEP-a unit of MetroED-provides educational opportunities in more than 40 locations throughout San Jose and Campbell. A combined total of about 20,000 adults are served annually in a variety of day and evening classes, including; English as a Second Language, GED Preparation and Testing, Adult Basic Skills, Medical Assisting, Office Skills and more.
MetroED is the largest career-oriented educational organization in
Santa Clara County, comprised of high school and adult occupational,
academic and community programs.
MetroED annually provides 31,000 diverse students with the skills
to help them be productive, income-earning and tax-paying contributors to
Silicon Valley.
