Medical Science/Health Careers course is designed to provide students an overview of the different careers associated with health sciences and health technology. It prepares students for entry level employment and introduces the student to the various careers within the health field and the necessary training required. It covers general anatomy & physiology, public health, mental health, medical terminology, nutrition, vital signs, cellular physiology, medical math, bioethics, confidentiality, and job-seeking skills. In addition, this course offers physical, emotional, social and cultural instruction that will provide the student with the skills necessary to give effective patient care in long-term care facilities, hospitals, home health and other patient care facilities. The class focuses on academic, technical skills, and employability practices. Students will develop personal and professional skills in the classroom that will transfer to the workplace:
Maribelle (Belle) Nera-Perez brings forth extensive years of nursing experience in operating room, kidney transplant, Alzheimer’s and Dementia care, hospice, assisted living and medical records department. She worked as a charge nurse in a skilled nursing facility managing other nurses and certified nursing assistants. Additionally, she served as a mentor for 7 years to SVCTE students and was part of the employer advisory board committee before joining the SVCTE faculty team. She has a Masters in Nursing Administration and a Bachelors’ of Science in Nursing. She is passionate about educating staff and students to grow their knowledge to better care for patients and families. Belle is dedicated to the profession of nursing and education culture of excellence, the value of professionalism, quality outcomes and collaborative practice with the diverse healthcare industry and the community.
