    Silicon Valley Adult Education will help you to earn your Adult High School Diploma or equivalency (GED/HiSET), and prepare you for college and new or better career options. Many resources are available to help you achieve your career and college goals.

    Students set their goals, and the teacher prepares an individual learning plan for each student to support those goals. Individual, small groups, and whole-class lessons are integrated into the curriculum as teachers engage with their students and facilitate successful student outcomes.     High School Equivalency (HSE)

    We offer free HSE test preparation classes and testing on our campus. Our courses prepare students for five tests required for the General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). Classes for High School Equivalency classes are offered in English.  Students must be able to speak, read, and write English.

    HSE exams are offered in a computer-based format at the Regional Testing Center on the Silicon Valley Adult Education campus.

    Career Technical Education (CTE)

    Career Pathways

    Silicon Valley Adult Education offers 21st-century career training programs to provide students with the relevant skills for the labor market demands. Classes are taught by industry professionals and can be taken individually to meet personal goals or in sequence toward a Program Certificate.

    Auto Body Repair  

    The introduction to auto body repair covers current industry standards for vehicle construction, metal straightening techniques, body fillers, MIG welding, and removal and replacement of bolted and welded auto parts. In addition, shop safety practices will be covered.

    Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC)

    Students will learn about the maintenance, overhaul, repair, and adjustment of residential and commercial heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration units. Students will use specialized tools of the trade, understand the theory and application of the basic principles of cooling, air, electrical fundamentals, and controls, and diagnose unit malfunction. Understanding “Green Building Technology.”  The course will prepare students for job opportunities as an HVAC installer (commercial, residential), HVAC technician (Level1), and commercial maintenance technician. Following the class, students can get their HVAC Certificate of Completion, EPA Certification, and Green Certification.

    Fashion, Textiles and Apparel

    The course offers a hands-on introduction to the fashion industry and business practices. Students will explore the potential careers they can take part in as up-and-coming designers and entrepreneurs. Exploration of art mediums includes screen-printing, sewing, pattern making, draping, and drawing and developing their apparel. The course objective is to engage students in the fashion industry by exploring business practices and gaining the necessary skills to move forward in applying to colleges, job placement, and starting their own apparel business. Students will experience the world of fashion from the studio to the runway.

    Google Workplace Essentials

    This class will give students an overview and teach students how to use Google Suite’s popular cloud-based apps to create, collaborate, and share different files. Students will learn to store and manage files in Drive, create and format documents in Docs, work with spreadsheets in Sheets, create presentations in Slides, and create surveys in Forms. Students will also learn a few tips on managing email, sending Google Drive attachments with Gmail, and managing events with Calendar.

    Medical Assistant

    This medical assistant course is a one-year program consisting of eight modules and a month of externship.  Each module meets daily for five to six weeks. At the end of the course, students will demonstrate mastery of front and back medical office procedures. Students may begin the program at the start of any module, as space is available.

    Medical Assistant Back Office 

    Assist physicians in the back office or clinic, medical lab, and EKG training. A 120-160-hour clinical assignment at a different site by arrangement is required.

    Prerequisite: High school reading level and passing Medical Terminology with a “C” or better. A physical exam and shots (TB, Tdap, Flu, Titer) are required by the fifth week of class.

    Medical Terminology 

    Learn and recognize word roots, prefixes, and suffixes used in medical language. Learn how to combine words to create meaningful medical conditions, comprehend their definition, and know the correct spelling. Emphasis is on medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, communication, medical ethics, and legality. This class meets the prerequisites for the Medical Assistant Back Office class.

    Pharmacy Technician

    This comprehensive 90-hour course is designed to meet the requirements necessary to pass the national certification exam for licensure with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). This is the most reputably recognized national certification organization for Pharmacy Technicians. Standards for this course have been systematically aligned with the benchmarks set by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement.

    The careers in Early Childhood Education Classes are a collaboration between West Valley Community College and Silicon Valley Adult Education. Silicon Valley Adult Education offers students a career pathway to quickly enter the workforce. Students will earn permits upon completion of classes.   

    These classes are free if students are enrolled in both West Valley Community College and Silicon Valley Adult Education High School Equivalency Class. If a student is not enrolled in a high school equivalency class, they will need to pay West Valley $331.00 for BOTH classes.

    CHST 001: Principles and Practices of Teaching Young Children 331

    This course examines the underlying theoretical principles of developmentally appropriate practices applied to programs and environments. Emphasis is on the key role of relationships, constructive adult-child interactions, and teaching strategies in supporting physical, social, creative, and intellectual development for all young children. This course includes a review of the historical roots of early childhood programs and the evolution of professional practices promoting advocacy, ethics, and professional identity.
