SAN JOSE, Calif. — Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) students earned eight medals at the SkillsUSA Regional Leadership and Skills Competition. Based on total points scored overall the team earned three gold, three silver, and two bronze.

We are very proud of all twelve SVCTE students who participated. Eight will advance to the SkillsUSA California State Leadership and Skill Conference on April 10, 11,17, and 18. The students represent a variety of partner school districts, including: Campbell Union High School District, East Side Union High School District, Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District, Milpitas Unified High School District, San Jose Unified School District, and Santa Clara Unified High School District.

Student competitions were held in the areas of 20 Second Elevator Story, Basic Health Care Skills, Cabinetmaking, Commercial Baking, Culinary Arts, Diesel Equipment, Dental Assisting, Firefighting, First-Aid CPR, Mobile Robotic Technology, Welding Fabrication, and many others. Leadership skills were demonstrated online and included customer service, job interviews, and prepared speeches.

“It is always awesome to see the students smile after a competition at a SkillsUSA event,” said Gina Fleming, SkillsUSA Lead Advisor and SVCTE Dental Assisting teacher. “I was initially concerned that students might not see the value of competing due to it being a virtual competition and was happy to see that regardless of that they enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. Students are excited to be advancing to the state competition.”
