Preparing Students to Thrive in College and Careers
|

Greetings!
Our school year continues to be full of excitement and student achievements at SVCTE and SVAE.
This month two students in the Film/Video Production program from San Jose Unified School District won the "Impact Award" from CreaTV.
Providing Work Based Learning activities for our students is very important in all of our programs. Work Based Learning provides students with field trips, guest speakers, mentors, job shadow and internship opportunities.
While many students were experiencing Work Based Learning, our Engineering and Fashion instructors were busy with students designing a special dress and school bus to make a dream come true for wheelchair bound Reina Fisher.
And finally, this week, we are so pleased to open our first student run - student store. The store offers students hands-on Work Based Learning experiences in business, customer service and entrepreneurship.

Annual Haunted House: Oct 30, 31

|
Join us for the 4th Annual SVCTE Haunted House and support high school students competing in SkillsUSA .
Follow the self-guided, high-tech, haunted path through a spooky graveyard and indoor scenes. Our costumed students will be sure to scare you!
Our location offers free parking and a Safe Zone for children to trick-or-treat on campus, making this a fun family event for the community.

Halloween Magic Wheelchair Bus Makes Local News!
|
|
Along with students, instructors Jim Burnham and Johnny Paul Vera designed a halloween dress and the Magic Wheelchair Bus for Reina, a 15-year-old whose wheelchair makes it difficult to find costumes.

Film/Video Students Win "Impact Award"
|
|
Congratulations to Cameron Augustine (Gunderson High School) and Devin Mckiernan (Pioneer High School) for winning the “Impact Award” for their film Iron Gun Into the Mainframe at The Creatives Awards Show at CreaTV on October 17. They produced this film in Spring 2019 in the Film/Video Production course taught by Jonathan Furtado.

Pharmacy and Sports Med Students Open Store
|
|
Thank you to Pharmacy Tech instructor Helena Polanco and Sports Medicine instructor Jennifer Rockett for opening our first student store. The store is located on the front side of building 800. It is filled with SVCTE tee-shirts, sweatshirts, school supplies and snacks. Funds will be used to support SkillsUSA and HOSA Student Organizations. They are open daily from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m.

|
|
Silicon Valley Adult Education (SVAE) offers adult education classes free of charge or at a low cost to adults 18 years or older. With a comprehensive adult school offering entry-level and advanced courses in health, technology, and careers in the trades, it is an excellent option for those looking to enhance their skills.

Construction Students Visit Big Creek Lumber
|
|
Students in the Construction Technology class went to Big Creek Lumber in Davenport. Evan Clark, instructor of this course, saw it as a great opportunity for them to meet industry experts and understand the process of converting raw material into components useful for manufacturing.

Mechatronics Students Visit Green Circuits!
|
|
On Friday, October 11, SVCTE Mechatronics Engineering students took a field trip to Green Circuits, an electronic manufacturing services company in San Jose. The students were given a first-hand look at the manufacturing industry and possible career tracks.

Chef Mychel Brewster of Stanford Visits Culinary
|
|
On October 21, Chef Mychel Brewster of Stanford University visited the Culinary Arts program at SVCTE. Students learned about the various career paths in the culinary arts, internship opportunities with Chef Brewster, and received tips on improving their craft.

Veterinary Hosts Adobe Animal Hospital Speaker

|
Thank you to Adobe Animal Hospital South Bay for coming to the Veterinary Sciences program at SVCTE. Students learned about the various career opportunities available in the field and built their own clinic mockup.

Supt. Lynch Speaks about Her Career Pathway
|
|
Superintendent Alyssa Lynch spoke with students in the Fashion Design and Textile Art class as a part of an ongoing series called Project Impact. She discussed pursuing excellence and encouraged students to find their own unique path towards success. With a bachelor's and master's degrees in fashion, Alyssa was able to share her life journey and creative projects in the field.

Dental Assisting Students Speak at Board Meeting
|
|
Celine Vazquez (Mt. Pleasant HS) and Maria Castillo (Prospect HS) from the Dental Assisting program came to the MetroED Board Meeting on October 9 to share how this program has given them the hands-on experience and preparation needed to be ready for certification and a future career in dental assisting.

Electrical Maintenance Student Shares His Story

|
Emilio Childers, a current SVCTE student in the Electrical Maintenance program, came to Family Info Night on October 9, 2019 to share the steps he is taking to transfer into the Local 332 Electrical Apprenticeship Union and how valuable the program has been to him.

Medical Science Promotes Healthy Ingredients
|
|
Medical Science students learned how gluten free, GMO, organic, and superfoods affect individual and overall population health by studying the ingredients in the food we consume daily.
|
|

Mechatronics Students Participate in FlexFactor
|
|
Mechatronics Engineering students presented their project ideas to a panel of judges at FlexFactor. FlexFactor was developed by NextFlex, a manufacturing company in San Jose, to challenge students to work in teams to identify a real-world problem, conceptualize an advanced hardware solution, and build a business model around their ideas .

Visitors from New Taipei Department of Education
|
|
On October 22, MetroED hosted a delegation of partners from the New Taipei Education Department. The group was comprised of teachers, principals, and other administrators. They spent the day visiting classrooms. The teachers attended a workshop hosted by Jim Burnham to learn hands on teaching strategies.

Volunteers make a difference in our students’ lives! Volunteer your time to tutor one-on-one with adult students who are completing credits for their high school diploma or learning English. Tutors are needed once or twice a week, morning or evening.
