#studentsinaction - Medical Assisting program gives students a shot in real-world experiences

Jose Serrano, Independence

As #ctemonth continues, so too does our weekly #studentsinaction series, this time giving our Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) Medical Assisting students in Tamie Garcia’s class a shot. This week, the students were practicing a number of different back office tasks, including butterfly method for phlebotomy, intradermal or TB testing for tuberculosis, intramuscular injection and more. “It’s actually everyone going on at once; organized chaos,” Garcia said.

She explained this semester the students have taken on internships, which will last through May 27, including at First Choice Action Urgent Care, Crescent Medical Center, and Endoscopy Center of Silicon Valley. “It’s a great opportunity for them to pick the doctors’ brains, the nurses’ brains, the medical assistants’ brains, and see if it’s the right fit for them,” she said.

Garcia explained the Medical Assisting program gives students the opportunity at a young age to access potential career paths.

“(The class) is a really great experience, hands on, and especially to go on to an internship and work in the field and be able to experience if this is what they want to do,” she said.
