Superintendent's Message

May was a race to the finish line. It was full of festivities and accomplishments during the final days of the 2022-2023 school year for the Metropolitan Education District. There was so much to celebrate and nothing excites me more than seeing all our students’ work highlighted, showcased, and rewarded during these end-of-year events.

At the end of May, more than 100 Silicon Valley Career Technical Education students were honored at the SVCTE Awards Ceremony for going above and beyond in their career technical education courses, many receiving scholarships for their dedication. Additionally, Silicon Valley Adult Education celebrated 30 students during its graduation. For many, this is something that has taken them years to achieve as life’s journey has taken a different path to achieve that accomplishment.

Student work was also on display throughout the month, through SVAE’s International Day, SVCTE’s Fashion Pop-Up, and SVCTE’s Film Festival. This is my 10th year of superintendency, but that doesn’t make the accomplishments any less amazing.

The year wrapped up with two successful WASC accreditations; SkillsUSA students qualifying for the SkillsUSA National Conference; strong partnerships with TESLA, Subaru and Work2Future; tours of SVCTE classrooms for over 100 community members; over 100 students attending our SVCTE Extended Learning after school program; 200 students enrolling in SVCTE Summer CTE Exploration programs; raising over $12,000 at the McTaggart Car Show; MetroED hosting the Santa Clara County School Boards Association Hoffman Awards; the Culinary Arts program hosting dinner for parents; hosting students, teachers and administrators from the New Taipei City delegation; and 1,600 students registering for SVCTE programs for fall 2023.

I want to thank you for your ongoing support of our students throughout the school year. If you want to get involved, here are some ways you can support MetroED in the coming months and 2023-2024 academic year.

Our monthly newsletter will return in August. Silicon Valley CTE and Silicon Valley Adult Education classes begin Thursday, August 10th. Until then, wishing you a fun, relaxing, and joyous summer!

SVCTE Celebrates Efforts of Student Ambassadors

In May, SVCTE celebrated the student ambassadors who volunteered this year to represent/promote campus programs and assist future students and their families through tours, school presentations, and public events.

SVCTE student ambassadors helped tremendously with SVCTE’s outreach efforts this semester. They assisted with 12 shadow days that served 241 prospective students, provided event support for SVCTE special events, and assisted as tour guides and/ or presenters for nine tours of the SVCTE campus. Overall, the ambassadors were active in helping over 2,000 people while representing SVCTE programs. We are so proud of their hard work.

SVCTE Construction Technology teacher Evan Clark and his students made new custom SVCTE games, which were a huge success at the Ambassador Celebration and at Meet Your Teacher Night on May 4.

SVCTE 17th Annual Custom and Classic Car Show May 12

The 17th Annual Silicon Valley Career Technical Education Custom and Classic Car Show was successful on May 12, once again thanks to the hard work and dedication of auto body teacher Bob McTaggart. He has coordinated the car show, which began in 2006, for 12 years and hasn’t skipped a beat.

Our amazing culinary students dished out a delicious pasta dinner, raffles prizes included student made items donated by the Construction Technology and Metals Technology classes, CCOCTA and so much more. Del Grande Dealer Group and Tesla were also on-site, and we are thankful for their representation. Additionally, Stevens Creek Subaru provided the car show with a $1,000 sponsorship.

To honor retiring Mr. McTaggart’s efforts for his work over the years, at the May 10 Governing Board meeting, MetroED passed a resolution to officially name the car show the SVCTE McTaggart Car Show beginning next year. Mr. McTaggart has drawn more than 1,000 spectators to attend the annual event each year, raising over $12,000 this year to benefit students.
